Welcome to Independent House – The Home For Your Business in Norwich

Preserving the History of Independent House

Independent House has been part of Norwich’s story for well over a century. Rich in character and heritage, the building has welcomed generations of residents, businesses and visitors through its doors, and we’re proud to preserve the stories that make it so unique.
Originally constructed in the 1800s as 5 & 7 Thorpe Mansions, the property was later renumbered to 10 & 12 Thorpe Road, before becoming the 18 & 20 Thorpe Road we know today. Standing proudly opposite Norwich Train Station, it has witnessed the city’s growth and transformation for more than 100 years.
Among its notable residents were Arthur Cleveland O.B.E., a former Lord Mayor of Norwich, and Major William Dods, who later established the Far East Heroes headquarters. During the Second World War, the building operated as Mrs Walker’s Hotel, welcoming guests throughout a challenging period in history.
In the early hours of 27 June 1942, Independent House was struck by an incendiary bomb during an air raid. Although the building suffered significant damage, it survived. The bombing is believed to be the reason why Independent House is now the only property in its terrace with a flat roof.

During recent renovations in 2026, we uncovered several fascinating reminders of the building’s past, including a timber beam bearing the words “Walker Hotel” and a Victorian bar of soap hidden beneath the floorboards. These discoveries are now proudly displayed in our reception, offering visitors a glimpse into the remarkable history hidden within the building’s walls.

Since 2003, Independent House has been independently owned and managed by the Goody family. Today, it combines its historic character with modern, flexible workspaces, meeting rooms and The Walker Hub co-working space, creating a welcoming environment for businesses of all sizes.

While we’re passionate about preserving our heritage, we’re equally committed to the building’s future. Independent House continues to provide a home for a thriving community of businesses, blending history, character and modern working in one of Norwich’s most distinctive business centres.
